Wednesday July 8th an effort by federal and state agencies along with the ASPCA made one of the largest dog fighting busts involving several states. It was believed to be the largest dog fighting operation in the states.
At the request of the Humane Society of Missouri, the ASPCA, along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, United States Department of Agriculture's Office of the Inspector General, Federal Bureau of Investigation, The U.S. Marshals Service and the United States Attorney, is collaborating in the rescue, veterinary care, and forensics evidence collection of dogs associated with multiple suspected dog fighting operations. The ASPCA will also be assisting in behavior evaluations of the dogs.
The dog fighting operation is believed to have spanned five states and included arrests in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma. Dogs are being safely transported to a secure facility under the direction of the Humane Society of Missouri Animal Cruelty Task Force, where they will be cared for until final disposition is determined by the United States District Court.
After seeing this report it brought back memories of the infamous Michael Vick. I did a search on the internet and here is what I was able to pull up.
Vick will be released from house arrest July 20th.
He played college football for Virginia Tech and was drafted into the Atlanta Falcons 2001 in a NFL draft.
April 2007 he was Identified as the key figure of an extensive unlawful Interstate Dog Fighting Ring operating over a period of 5 years leading to Federal & State felony charges under plea agreements, as well as payment of approximately $1 million for care & rehabilitation of some of the dogs.
He was suspended from play by the NFL in Aug 2007. In December 2007 he was sentenced to serve a 23 month Federal prison time. Three years of prison time on other charges in Virginia were suspended for good behavior.
He filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008 with liabilities of $20.5 million and assets of $16 million. His Bankruptcy case has not been resolved.
He was released from prison May 20 2009.
On June 12th he was released by the Falcons after numerous attempts to trade him had failed.
The word now circulating around the NFL these days is that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is looking into Vick's case to determine if he will take any disciplinary action against him.
Since he was already suspended from the NFL do you think by suspending him further would seem cruel as well as double Jeopardy?
Do you think he should play again?
I personally think he should never play again. We need role models for our children, not a criminal !
